I have just purchased a 1971 Hercus which will be used to repair and make simple parts for my car restoration projects.
I realise that the wood workers will hate me but this is the best site for what I need to (re)learn. I'm 62 and havn't used a lathe for over 40 years and even then I was not that good.
I have an engineering background so may be able to help in some way too. :wink:

Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.

Welcome from another local. I am a Hercus user but not owner (yet:U) and until the beginning of the year also hadn't touched a metal lathe since school. I do enjoy playing around with it now when I have the chance but am way down the bottom of the knowledge band. You didn't happen to buy the Craftsman that was on gumtree in Bentley did you, I looked longingly at it several times.

No I bought 9" AR 13503 (matching numbers) from Fiora Machinery in Cannington. $1250+. Cleaned it up, zeroed everything and followed the photo build in lathes.co.uk. Very helpful. I noticed my original post did not really say what I meant. I have a general and automotive engineering background so might be able to help others too, just not with lathe problems..:rolleyes:

We don't hate metalworkers, they have a part in this site and the truth being told most of the tools the woodworkers use contain some sort of metal. :U
Just thinking out loud, does chalk contain metal?
