Advice with Garage Door?

Hey there we just bought a weatherboard home in Noosa, I really want to put in an automated garage door, cause feck getting in and out of the car each time with kids. Soooo hopefully I can figure out how to post a pic but in order to put in a double garage door I have to get rid of the pole in the middle. Can we do this with a lintel in the apex, will it obstruct the head height any? And is it something my Hubby could be talked through, he's no builder but he's handy and strong enough lol thank you in advance.
