Hi all you computer gurus
I need to do a re-install of XP on my pc but don't really want to lug it to the shop and pay to have it done. I don't imagine it is a difficult process once one knows how, could someone please explain the process or at least direct me to a web site that will. All important files are backed up and I have a registered copy of OS on cd.

craigb's advice will work IF the bios is set to first boot device is CD.
Just remember to FORMAT 'C' drive first otherwise you will end up with 2 XP's to boot from. :p

Once you have the basic operating system reinstalled along with the correct drivers and updates etc. use something like Ghost to make a copy of the partition on which you have the operating system, this can then be used to clean the crapola off that particular partition, without the need to go through the whole thing.

Julian, the biggest issues people have with XP is the serial number. It can be a problem straight away, or later when you try and install a service pack.
My suggestion is download a small program call "rock XP". Run it and retrieve the serial number that XP is actualy using. If needed you can also insert a new one with this tool. Nothing worse than having a legitimate copy of windows that will not allow you to install it because of some serial number stuff up.
You might also setup a regular defrag on the drive to keep things running smoothly...
This may help.....item 4 does not make itself too clear when you actually do it.
The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:
1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message asking if you wish to boot from the CD......<YES> ....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.
It goes without saying that you must back-up ALL your vital data and ensure you have all installation discs for programs you need.
Don't feel bad when you find you deleted something you need because we ALL do it. I think it is compulsary. :) You will get by without it.
