Cabots Danish oil on solid body guitar????

Sorry but I have duplicated this thread from the musical instruments forum.....need answers...

hi there. I`m just finishing a solid body guitar and having a bad time trying to coat it with spray lacquer. Have given up after two attempts...rubbing out buggered it...a spot that must have oil or something in the timber that just ruins things.....SO....I have bought some Cabots Danish oil..the polyurethane based one that you paint or wipe on...several coats a day apart and you end up with a matt finish. Thats all ok with me as I think the camphor laurel will look great anyway. I will have to sand the neck down to do the danish..pity as it sprayed great. Oh well.

Anyone have any negative thoughts on using this finish. I was suprised that it is poly based as I have some Organ oil which I used on the rosewood pick guard and it is a slight bit more shiny than matt. I thought (assumed) that the danish is the same as organ oil without the heavy citrus smell. Any suggestions folks???? Thanks in advance....

My only worry would be that it isn't waterproof/sweatproof......and it does require regular recoats.

hi Bruce. I decided to go with the DO after much thought. Did a sample piece and it looked good with one coat. I fine sanded the guitar and applied the DO. After a couple of hours it is smooth as and feels almost dry. Will wait until the morning to do the second coat though. thanks again.

I have used danish oil on a couple of flat pieces but nothing like a guitar.

I can not remember the brand but as you already read the side of the can it does contain poly. I was a matt finish as that was what I wanted.

I put on three or four coats.

thats what I a gunna doo. Three coats maybe four depending on what it looks like. Then a rub down with teak wax and wipe off....done.

I used to use danish oil a lot, but the one thing I hated was how long the smell hung around for (it smelled for months afterwards). Does give a lovely finish though. (I use the super-expensive Kunos livos now instead because the smell disappears really quickly).
