Attaching timber slats to brick piers

I need to attach 1200mm long timber slats to my brick piers.

I'm going to attach something* vertically to the brick pier which I will then screw the horizontal timber slats to.

Now my question is what should the something be (timber, aluminum, etc) and how so I attach it to the bricks? Dynabolts?
