Question for the builders and draftsmen etc

Hello all.

I am currently in the planning stages of a possible renovation on our 1960s weatherboard house. We have owned this house since late 2009 and a previous owner has undertaken some renovations without permits. The area of renovation work this thread focuses on is a porch that has been filled in to become part of the lounge area. The work undertaken involved fill-in windows and framing between and under existing posts/beams. The opening was created by removing the existing window and no structural work was needed.

As part of our Reno we are returning the porch area to its previous state as when built. My question is do we need to get this covered by the building permit? or as there is no record of this work done, ie done without permits, can I just return it to its previous state as if never happened?
