hi, we are currently in the proccess of choosing floorboard for our house. we idealy would like to get a dark brown wood however this is extremenly expensive to get. so we are now looking into staining the wood japan black however are just worried that it may look cheap. can any one tell me the pro's and con's of staining? we would like quite a dark look.

Corrina, maaate, I suggest that you have a better look at the forum layout. Your query should be in the the renovations section or perhaps the finishing section but not down here in the dim dark regions of the cellar where no-one hardly ever comes......
Oh, and by the way, you should feel very privileged as that was the politest I have ever been to someone who did something so bloody dopey! ;)

Do a small area at a time, apply with a brush and wipe off with a clean cotton rag. Practise on some scrap timber first. Then do the smallest rooms first by the time you get to the big areas you should be quite proficient.

Chris, this IS the finishing section?? Or am I missing something?
Corrina, have you looked into jarrah veneer type flooring? Not sure if it's available in Melbourne.

you can use Feastwaston proof tint, with a tint base, the proof tint can be mixed at any ratio using the tint base, u can also mix the colours.
The tint base makes the staing process easy and is a very workable product to apply. once the tint is down you can apply 2 coats of a Feastwaston timber floor finsh like, tung oil or water base etc..
