help needed with varnish/lacquers etc

Hi.
I really need help with a problem I have: A solid wood windowsill became mouldy so I had to strip it back to bare wood and revarnish. After doing this the wood was noticeably darker, even though the varnish claimed to be clear and colourless. I originally thought the wood was beech or oak butit seems it is actually mahogany (the light colour threw me as I always associate mahogany with darker colours rather than very light). The colour is totally incongruous with the surrounding skirtings etc and I want to get as close to the real wood colour as possible and have a tough/durable coating. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

It could be one of the not Mahoganies, like Iroko or Utile.

Any chance of some pictures of the offending windowsill and some of whatever you'd like it to match please.

When the wood gets wet and then dry contiuously it quite often oxidises to a blackish colour . The only thing to do is to scrape and sand the wood down until you get to new wood , if it is still dark in colour you could bleach it and then finish it with microporous oil or paint . You use microporous because it lets the wood breathe and then it is very much less likely to deteriate .
