Hei Guys,
Can anyone recommend a decent freebie firewall.
I've been using Sygate but since changing from dialup to broadband it is acting up.
I've having to disable it to get in to various websites - these are all sites that worked fine on when I was on dialup.

Try alt.comp.freeware in google groups, do a search for firewall. I did a search and came up with the link below. If it does not work I will give you more information when I have time later on. Also do a search for priceless freeware which is a site that the alt.comp.freeware users have put together to promote the best freeware found during the previous year. This site has been going many years now.

Zone Alarm is not a freebie - they have a 15 day trial but I don't want to mess around having to reload it on two pc's every two weeks.

Kerio is good but technical to set up properly.
Their latest version is a dog.
Runs so slow you might as well use a 2400 bd modem. :mad:
I use a slightly older version and it appears to block all attacks.
Zone alarm is available free and its pretty good once you get used to managing the pop up warnings.

So you blokes think Zone Alarm is good eh? Hmm. I've got a cousin who works in the computer security industry (protecting people, not selling the programs) and he has giggles at people who believe that, claims he can crack it with very little effort. Same goes for all the freebies.
Mate, you get what you pay for ... and I'm guessing what you're protecting ain't worth much if free is all it's worth :D .

Quite often you will find the least known programs are more effiecient at keeping intruders at bay than the known ones.

I guess if anyone is determined enough theyll crack into your computer. The fact is, the average hack attempt comes from people looking for a computer with open ports. If they dont find any open ports on a machine they generally give up and look elsewhere.Quote:

I agree with Kiwigeo.... It a smaller version of the Pro edition.
I participated in a trial of Zone Alarm free version with a well known consumer magazine and my computer was never breached. I don't know how many took part in the test but Zone Alarm came out as a very good product.
I find it easy to use and have been running it for years and have had no problems.

The fact is that if a determined profesional wants my data he will have my data regardless how much money I do or don't spend of software.
The harsh reality is that I have to rely on freebie software - granted it probably isn't as good as the paid version but it is better than nothing and will stop the amateurs.

All the popular anti virus and firewalls free or purchased are easily crackable if you know where to find the information. The hackers go after what they think will be on most systems. If you want to pay the money the firewalls do get more reliable but that can get very expensive.Quote:
