Pine finishing

Hey all you fingerless splinters,

I have a few jobs that are just using bog standard boring radiata pine.

Every time I apply any sort of finish it turns a horrid insipid yellow colour. (like every piece of pine furniture at "those" bulk furniture places)

Is there a finish that will protect while maintaining the natural blonde of the pine?

If you really want to maintain the colour then water based polyurethane will do that and protect it well, but it is a butt-ugly plastic finish when I have used it. Maybe Ubeaut had hard shellac too.

Some people on here who are better at finishing than me could verify if this is applicable to your situation, but when I have stained Radiata the last few times I have applied Ubeauts Sanding Sealer beforehand. It makes the Radiata a lot less patchy and allows a finish to go on nice and evenly.

What ever finish you are recommended here, I'd look to see of the Sanding Sealer could help you. Timely, there is another thread at the moment comparing Ubeaut's Sanding Sealer to Feast Watson's. Ubeauts is the only product to use for sanding sealer.

Short answer is no.

Pine will yellow with age.

I have used NC lacquer (30%) and that doesn't yellow it too much.

I'm voting with - I use Pylons Hi Tech, or Stylwood NC Lacquer... less yellowing...
