Gas vs Electric hot water

Hi all,
It's probably the case that I'll have new gas pipes fitted to the house if i don't do away with it all together. I going to have a few quotes once I find a reputable plumber and was wondering what the cost savings of going from electric to gas hot water; what's the calculation to compare costs?
My though was if I keep gas on I'll extend the new line about 10 meters past the current electric unit and unto the backyard ( BBQ etc at later date)
