Hey! I'm new here. I'm ank, 34 year old male, live in Penrith NSW (near Sydney) and have been bitten by the woodworking bug. :D
I'm an iOS software developer and overall nerd :crash: and love Maths (in fact, I am going back to uni next year to study a BSc. in Mathematics). I had an extremely stressful 2012 and have found that woodworking relaxes me enormously :2tsup:.
I also sell calculators online, and was hoping to make some interesting wooden contraptions in the future! In particular would like to make things like Möbius strips and other weird surfaces and sell them online.
I live with my six year old son and my wife, and love motorcycles as well as VWs :cool:.
I've downloaded a huge collection of pdf files about woodworking and purchased some DVDs and books. I've watched Peter Sellers' artisan classes and really like the way he does things although it's very clear he is a master at what he is doing and nowhere as easy as it looks.
Last night I glued my first edge-to-edge joint of 2x4s for a workbench top, and I'm about to go see if they are still holding together.
I also want to do woodcarving and have been spending too much money at Sydney Tools and Carbatec.
Finally, I got a bunch of used rusty bench planes that I'm cleaning up and hopefully will be using soon. I've started a thread about those if you are interested: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f152/s...ner-me-163646/

You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you keep up the photos like in the "plane thread" as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
You've very right about the woodwork being a relaxing way to unwind down.
Check out the toy making section for ideas for you young one.

Also, I just screwed up and mistakenly cut a little bit off the cable of my jig saw - didn't tight it around my arm like I should have. I am inclined to just fix it myself...

If you've replaced a cord plug before you could do the repair yourself BUT if not PLEASE ask for some advice & assistance from a sparkie......cheers.

I'll just open the thing and replace the whole cord. For now I'm using my multitool instead. If it proves too difficult I'll throw it away and get a new one :C

If you have nerdy inclinations, you'd probably enjoy some of the creations at Matthias Wandell's site. (includes a binary adding machine made of wood and marbles).

Oh, and for the snipped cord....I use the cheap method and just buy a cheap extension cord, snip the female end off, and wire that into the tool. Cheaper than buying a plug by itself!

Corded tools, ie 240v often have more grunt from my experience and no issue with charging batteries.
Saying that I have a full set of M18 Milwaukee, some Bosch Blue & Hitachi cordless...
Before you buy new cordless tools, do a price comparison between Gasweld [Batt St], Sydney Tools [Batt St], United Tools [Corrine Ave] & Total Tools [Corrine Ave] plus of couse the "rabbit hutch" at either north or south Penrith. If you are going to keep up the woodwork for a long long time, may I encourage you to save your pennies & buy Trade Quality tools to last......
