Cover holes in front door.

Oops, my fault, I told may carpenter to install my pull handles half way down the 2340x1200 front door, however that meant the mortice lock now sits much too low.

I want to move the mortice lock higher and pull handles say 30cm.

Now it will create holes where the mortice lock will be.

I believe the timber is merbau.

What is the best way to cover the holes on the front and back of the door.

I was thinking of sliding a block of soft timber, I.e. pine into the side where the mortice lock was and glueing it into place to give the door some extra strength and then using some timber mate or similar to fill up the holes and hope for the best they won't be noticeable.

I don't want to paint the door.

Can you think of any other suggestions so the door won't look so bad?

I'm also thinking of installing two stainless steel metal plates to cover the holes.

The metal plates will only need to be 100x25mm which is similar size to the metal plate on the mortice lock.

FYI, it's a Nidus OZI 3 mortice lock.
