Last time my wife complained that I had left the seat up. I apologised profusely. Then I took by the hand, led her into the toilet, and in a very serious toned explained how the hinge worked.

She didn't talk to me for a week after that, which I considered a win win situation.

I think its actually illegal if I leave him by himself while I go out and get . :p
