Help - outside house doors near the sea

I hope I can get help from this forum. Our house is only ten years old, near the seaside, and the two doors and their frames for front and rear entry, are beginning to dry and the varnish stuff flake off. I guess I will have to rub the whole lot off, and then coat it with something clear or a wood stain.

The thing is, what do the experts consider to be robust enough to handle the conditons near the sea?

Would Tung Oil or China Oil be a good idea? T.I.A. :)

I did a read up on Tung, and it's only good for interior according to the distributors. Funny though, there are references to the fact that the Chinese have used ot for 500 years for their boats. :?

I would suggest that you need to strip the frames and doors back to bare timber,
You then have the choice of finishes.

1 marine Varnish,
2 DEKS OLJE Timber finish
3 2 pack marine varnish.
All the above are available from BIAS< WHITWORTHS<or any good boat chandler.

These coatings are designed for the MARINE Environment, and should give you several years of good life.

Your other alternative is to paint the doors & frames.

My front door gets the full dose of our dry summer sun every day (except when overcast:D) and 15 years on is still in very good nick. I used Deks Olje and will again. I also use to use iot on my TS with very good results. Used as they suggest and it will do the job without a problem:2tsup:

Marine varnish had crossed my mind, so I'll look into. Other than that, I may just have to go with paint, which is not all that appealing because the interior timbers are all done with that clear satin stuff builders use. That's why it hasn't fared well outside too I reckon.
