Question for Melbourne shellac users

I have just bought some U - Beaut white shellac and am trying to find a source for industrial grade ethanol . Nooooooooooooo joy after trying 2 chemists , 3 paint shops and 2 hardware stores , the big B included . Where do you buy yours ????????:confused: I'm in the eastern suburbs

Neil will probably have a go but I just use good ol' plain metho from Bunnings.

The paint shop in Nunawading will get it in for you, as most good paint stores will.

Doesn't matter much if you use it to dilute premixed White Shellac but if you are making your own then it is well worth it to get the 100 % stuff as it takes less time in polishing. You don't have to keep rubbing until the water evaporates before a good shine appears.

I get 100% metho from a paint shop in Boronia, on Boronia Rd. Sorry l can't rmember its name. Its up the top end near the post office.

Thanks Sturdee & Gumby . That's all I want to do at this stage - dilute white shellac so I will just nick a bit of the ordinary metho that my better half uses .

Dont use the stuff from Bunnies/Mitre 10, I cant think of the name of it, but it will glug up every time.

I only use "Diggers" brand metho, and have never had a problem with watery glug.

must be you Uncle, mine works just fine. Not a Glug to be seen.

BTW, when applying the white shellac, Peter, try diluting to about 50% at first. Use 4-5 coats, a light sand, then a final coat (still diluted). Wait only a few minutes between coats but after the final coat, wait 12 hours and then buff with EEE paste. The finish is sensational. (oh, and a coat of sanding sealer and light sand before you start applying the shellac helps but if you don't have sanding sealer, just use the diluted shellac instead. Then sand and proceed as above)

That's useful advice Gumby. Thanks. Am hovering over a cedar chest (actually procrastinating for months cos I don't want to screw it up) thinking about shellacking.

btw Mitre10 in Sydney rd. Brunswick also have pure meths. And some other hard to get finishes.

No probs. I didn't get it at all until DPB told me to thin the stuff down to 50%. What a difference that makes. No streaks, easy to apply with a pad and you can wax it or buff with EEE afterwards. Being an impatient person, I love the way it dries fast. The chest will look great but try a scap piece first to get the technique right.

G'Day 5T . Yes . We keep it in the fridge for the craps suzettes - cheaper than brandy and more spectacular:D
