Should I attempt this? Or leave it as is and go fishing instead.

Hi all

I have inherited a Treated Pine deck, which I guess is approximately 4 years old. It is weathered and greyed but apart from this it's in good nick. My better half want's me to change it's color, eg "jarrah" or something similar. We cannot afford to replace the Treated Pine with the real thing so she want's me to clean, stain then oil using products such as "Cabot's or FW" Decking Stain then Decking Oil.
Has anyone used any of these products successfully??? Or am I going to make a rod for my own back? If so, should I continue to change the subject everytime it is brought up, and put my time to better use and go fishing??

I've stained mine light grey and use Wattyl clear deck oil annually (one recoat so far, so I'm on track!! :D )

Try a sample or two before you commit to the whole deck, and prepare to keep the oil up as necessary and I think you'll find it much nicer.

I'm not sure about a darker colour though, you may find it looks like "stained pine".

Better try a small spot. I have a cypress pine deck, we also wanted the jarrah look so I got some cabots decking oil with natural pigment, color jarrah (whatever that means) but the deck does not look like Jarrah, more like redgum perhaps, I should have stuck to plain oil instead. Not nearly dark and brown enough. Perhaps a stain before oil will work better - there are plenty of those, but they tend to give that stained instead of natural look.

If SWMBO is a fine cook, a wonderful partner, a pleaure to be with on most occasions, and comforting when you are depressed, then I would go along with her suggestions, give it a try and see what happens.

Feast and Watson have a product which cleans old grey timber. Then you can process as you see fit, ie stain, oil etc.

Hi,

I had a go at this 2 years ago, very similar old treated pine deck greying etc ....

Washed the deck down, scrubbed it with a timber reviver product diluted with water, that really cleaned it up nice ready for the Cabots decking stain in a(Jarrah) look.

I applied two coats, it looks darker...and better than it was.

I havnt oiled it for two years and its looking average in colour now, really needs oiling each year to keep it looking good.
