U-Beaut Traditional Wax over estapol

G'day,

I have a silky oak cabinet/bookcase that is special importance to me which is finished in estapol. Will buffing it with traditional wax give me an unforeseen surprises? :dunno:

e.g. anything nasty - now or in the future. :shrug:

I tried some ubeaut wax over estapol and it was a mistake. I think the wax needs to 'soak' into the wood and the estapol wouldn't allow it.

The wax looked 'swirly' and just wouldn't buff. Finally managed to get the wax off and now I just use Mr Sheen!

This is not a bad comment on the wax (I love it), it just doesn't work over estapol.

Hi Waldo, like murry said the estapol will stop the wax from going in. If it looks too glossy just over it lightly with some 000 or 0000 steel wool lightly wipeing with the grain. Or some wet and dry grade depends on what type of finish you want.

What is estapol... some sort of lacquer? As mentioned, if the surface is too glossy, wax doesn't work well. Cutting back the gloss gives the wax a grip and improves the overall appearance, especially if the wax has a warm tint (it reduces harsh light reflections).

Hi WW, yes Estapol is just Wattyl's name for Polyurethane

Is there a problem with the Estapol surface that it needs something else done to it?

Is it too shiny, too dull, not smooth enough, has imperfection, etc?

For mine, if a finish that is good. Leave it alone. If the finish has a problem, go for a fix of some sort and there are a number (couple of good ones here). If it's Estapol (poly)......... No comment.

There's no problem with the finish - it's clean with no imperfections I just wondered about giving it a zing. But estapol doesn't work with wax, I might just wash over with warm slightly soapy water.

Straight estapol isn't everyone's cup, but that's what was done. I thought about cutting it right back and starting anew - maybe I will go with the wet & dry. I'll see what I think the more I walk past it in the shed.

When I deliver my furniture I give them a wipe over with O'Cedar or F&W furniture polish and they look magnificent. I always give the client a bottle of OCedar with the piece.

So OCedar works well on top of estapol? If so I'll track some down. :2tsup:

I don't know if this is helpful or not!
I first brushed on one pack "satin polyurethane" on a slab top table
then finished it with "Danish Teak Oil" applied with fine steel wool along the grain;
no plastic look finish, but well protected.
