Anybody have any experience doing this sort of thing?
I want to respray an old electric guitar but have never sprayed solid color onto timber before can anybody advise the type pf paint i should use and if you need to clear coat over it.
I have stripped the thick Poly coat and thin color undercoat from the guitar and have sanded the clear base coat but do i need to go back to bare timber or can i go right over the clear one with color?
I've had good success with sanding back the existing gloss coat with an electric sander then using fine grade steel wool to finish. I used standard gloss paint from supercheap and went over what remained of the existing colour. Once dry, more steel wool, second coat, repeat until it's built up. I've always meant to put a clear coat over it but haven't got there yet.
Remember not to try this on a valuable instrument, I did it on a $50 Washburn 3/4 electric for my gf but there's no way I'd be trying this one something decent. Remember too that paint does alter the tone of the instrument somewhat.

Just spray it in thin coats, and use fine grade steel wool between them and you should get decent enough results. Again, only do this to bring a shine back to a beater, keep cheap enamel well away from a good instrument!
