Glue-up after oiling - question

Hi all,

a quickie - I have some small frame and panel doors, oiled 2 days ago with Organoil Danish Oil prior to glue-up. When oiling, I was very careful to avoid areas around the mortises.

However, it is clear that in a few places a little oil has penetrated to the depth of the mortise sides by a few faint blotches of oil discolouration visible inside them. Although a tiny amount, I'm a bit concerned about the impending glue-up now, using Titebond I.

Should I wait further for curing or have I blown it completely?? Perhaps some lovely big nails, right through the middle of the joints!! :;

PS. This is for a PNG Rosewood chest of drawers - a built-in for our little boy, almost completed. 8 dovetailed drawers with R'wood faces and the 2 frame and panel doors, all with R'wood. *phew* - LOTS of work for a novice like me! Next, a strip kayak (if the missus will permit of course...)

Your panel doors do need strong joints because your little boy will probably have a swing on them now and again, but so long as you have reasonable areas of mortise and tenon contact unsealed by the Danish oil I think you will get away with it. I had a similar experience and thought that about 10% of my mortise was compromised, but because the joint was 200% over engineered in the first place I went ahead and have had no trouble in a couple of years of use. Many thanks FP the 2nd. Yes, this lot has been a little over engineered and with luck, my young lad will appreciate the efforts his dad has gone to and pay some respect to his Rosewood chest of drawers!

However, I doubt it.

an option is to wipe the oily bits with acetone before gluing. That is what is recommended when gluing naturally oily woods

Well, I had another look and there was minimal oil contamination of the mortise areas and so I got stuck into it with the Titebond and voila! - all is well and dandy.

Many thanks for your advice - much appreciated. Now my little boy has a NG Rosewood chest built into his room. We've only got crappy Ikea stuff in ours - sigh - that can only mean more projects! :-
