Uplifting floods photo

I found this photo quite moving. It typifies the true Aussie spirit. Great caption / title

AS floodwaters rose in Ipswich, one man risked everything to save the life of a kangaroo. While the man is unknown to many, Ipswich photographer Nick De Villiers was on hand to catch the action and the man-of-the-moment. Mr De Villiers said the kangaroo jumped into the floodwaters near One Mile bridge at about 6.30pm yesterday and was quickly swept downstream, unnoticed by SES volunteers. The man then raced across the water, about five metres away from shore despite police protests to grab the kangaroo and carry it to safety. While the man disappeared shortly after, the kangaroo was well cared for. "It seemed a bit shocked," Mr De Villiers said. "But when we left a group of people were around it and someone had a towel out to keep it warm. It seemed to perk up a bit after that/"

Saw this in the paper this morning, bough back memories of the Koala in the bushfires in Vic.

very commendable but in the process endangering his own life and those that may have had to rescue him. The koala photo was a different thing altogether as the fire had passed by that area and no person was put in danger by that action.
I may sound heartless but I believe human life is more important than that of a wild animal. And yes I am an amimal lover and have reared orphaned roos more than once but would never put myself or others lives in danger to rescue one.

You are a brave man :-) the thought had occurred to me but whether child or animal both are innocent victims who don't understand what's happening and both deserve a second chance.

The fact he was potentially putting others at risk if they had to rescue him is a moral quandary that would apply if the rescued was a human baby as well I guess.

Being a vegan for moral reasons the comparison is a little less clear for me as I strongly believe both animal and human have similar moral value and I would risk my life for both.

I too have my flak jacket on for that last :-)
