I have turned a goblet out of yellow gum/white ironbark and not sure the best finish for this.
I had thought of using Wattyl’s Estapol 7008, (2 pack two pack polyurethane) but not sure if that is safe.
I have used Shellawax on a goblet but the drink, (wine), left a tide line so that was not a good success.
If it is to be used for wine/spirits what is the best way to go?
The timber needs to be sealed from the drink.
Have read of guys using Rustin's Plastic coating. 2 pack product.
Shellawax (liquid nor cream) at least 2 - 3 coats should be fine. One coat not so good. You need to sand to at least 1200 grit or higher and you also need to allow 20 days for the cross linking of the shellawax to complete.
Had a chap in US who did a heap of ceremonial goblets that were used on a regular basis for a toast with Wild Turkey. 2 years down the track and no problems. That was a year or so ago and haven't heard anything to the contrary as yet.
The first coat of Shellawax is basically in the timber, so it will mark relatively easily especially with red wine. Second and subsequent coats are building a surface coating which will be much more durable. However these won't reach their full resistance to alcohol etc until the cross linking has completed which takes around 20 days.

PS other option is Hard Shellac which again needs the 20 days to cross-link but has been used successfully on goblets and wine bottle stoppers etc.

I will have a second go with the shellawax as painting anything in this current heat is one big step close to a pain in backside.
