Hi All,
I have a rumpus room which has bare masonary walls. The ceiling has plasterboards and cornices but now we would like to apply plasterboards to the brick wall. My question is...
1. Is it better to apply the plasterboard directly onto the brick wall? or build a wooden frame first?
2. In either case, what do I do with windows and existing cornice?

A few things.
I am replastering our brick house at the moment and am using cornice cement to apply the boards directly to the wall. This has worked fine, however it would also work just as well to batten out the wall, and put the plasterboard onto that as well.
I imagine you will probably have to cut the exising cornice out, otherwise the plasterboard on the wall will sit proud of the cornice. It is not to hard to do this, just cut fine along the edge of the cornice and use a slightly larger cornice to hide the mess left behind.

If the brick walls are reasonably true just stick the plasterboard straight to it with cornice cement and/or wallboard adhesive.
With your window openings you can either apply plasterboard to the reveals as well and then use external coners that you plaster over or you can fit timber reveals and architraves. When applying plasterboard around window or door openings never let your joins coincide with the corners of openings as you will get cracks there.
Cornice: either remove or just butt the sheet up under it and cover the lot with a larger cornice, I prefer the latter method, quicker and less mess.

Why not get the wall rendered and avoid all the added work?
Sticking a few panels of plasterboard directly to the brickwork and finishing off the joins is a lot easier than solid render and you will get a better join in the corners fixing like with like rather than render with plaster sheet.
