Hi
I want to extend my existing deck/veranda and am thinking of replacing the old boards with new no nail decking system (merbau).
Should I go with this system or go with traditional screw/nail system? What disadvantages have been noted for no nail system?
I am not sure as I haven't seen many reviews on no nail decks.
Please also advise cost - material and labour that I can expect to pay in Sydney area.

There's a no nail decking place near me. They charge about 7.50 per lm for the boards (90x25) with fittings (ie plastic thingos and screws). You need to buy glue on top of that but it's not that expensive. Obviously, sub floor is not included in that price. (nor labour, of course). Also, note that is Melbourne, but cost should be similar. It's mainly aimed at the DIY market.

I have a new decking made from merbau and will be coating it soon with spa'n' deck, some of the fixing nails are just above surface and I intend to sand down deck...must they be flush?
The nails should be sunk below the surface of the deck if you are sanding - otherwise you'll sand any galvanising off them if they are not stainless steel. Worst case scenario is that you could end up effectively sanding the heads off if they are too proud of the deck!

Think Wongo did a deck recently, just can't remember if it was no nails.
If the system was really good I would prefer it to nailing because you won't have to punch protruding heads, you won't get nails working loose and then protruding above the surface as the deck ages. These can be murder on tender feet.
i build about 4 or 5 decks a month, i always scratch my head when asked this question as i can only think about potential cupping or twisting of the boards over the long term
