Cost of draftsman?

Hi everyone

We recently had a draftsman out to discuss drawing up plans for a 2nd level covered deck, 1 - 2 retaining walls and a pool. We were quoted $3300 plus extra for engineers drawings (about $700). I didn't think too much about the price at the time as a work mate had recently spent about the same amount for house extension drawings.

However today we have been advised of another draftsman who has quoted over the phone about $800 (plus engineers I assume). They did plans for a friend's house extension for $300 (mates rates).

Why such a massive difference in price? Am I getting completely ripped off by the first draftsman? What would be the average rate?

The plans are very straight forward, there are no design aspects involved. I have given basic plans with everything we want in 2D drawings, plus pictures of identical features that we want.
