Hello hello

Hi Woodworking folk!

I'm a newbie from Sydney doing some research on designing and making some rabbit hutches in the near future. Not that I am sure I can make them myself (no tools, no skills or space haha!).

I am currently designing them (in inkscape) with my ideas and plans in the hope that I a) find someone to make them using my design or b) manage to make them myself (haha. yes. I really don't see that happening!).

So I am going to have a mosey around and see if I can learn a thing or two before I try and find a builder to do what I want.

No reason why you couldn't build a rabbit hutch or two. Plenty of advice and help to be had hereabouts. Just ask away.

I only own a staple gun and a screwdriver and a rusty bent handsaw. Can't see me being able to make it any time soon.
But I hope to be able to learn a bit more so I can take my plans to someone and work it all out..

Hi welcome aboard, Don't think you would find much of a market up here for rabbit hutches, not allowed to have rabbits in this state.:)

Munruben - get a magicians license - then you can get a rabbit!

Billy, thanks, I'll check into it. This might be a silly question but are Women able to utilise Men's Sheds?

Welcome to the forum.

Depending on your design I would think that you only need to have a hammer, nails, hand saw, ruler and pencil. That should be the start of the build. If you use large nails or screws then you would need a drill and drill bits to pre-drill.

I should have a design up soon to share and get some helpful tips! The largest area of wood will be 1m x 1.2m if created in one panel (using Ply wood or sheet wood), or the same area in planks of wood (pine?)...

I've also got to think about finishing (lacquer or oil?). Keeping in mind rabbits *do* like to chew so anything on the inside needs to be non-toxic.

Thanks to the Wood Work Forum I downloaded Sketchup and am working my way through that to make up my diagrams...

Hahaha... David... I'm at a loss as to who you are... I have an idea, but a little confused (my brother's name is david and beyond that I know 3 davids directly LOL! Sorry! - Guessing David that I got the 6 foot tank off?)

Nope, don't have the rats, though we are still in the club and I am on the committee.

When pregnant with my daughter became VERY allergic to rats and I am still very allergic to them 5 years on. Rabbits on the other hand - I do not have any allergies to them at all which is lovely!

What are you sanding?

A really nice old day bed that has been badly treated in the past. Originally shellac ...and then some villain painted over it with multiple undercoats and a pink water-based paint. I didn't take 'before' pics ...I suppose I should have, but it was very ugly and I knew deep down there was some really nice wood.

Oh, I love old style day beds! Will love to see photos when it is done! will you shellac it again?

And OMG - The places you stumble across people! Are you still part of FK? I haven't been there for a long time since I don't do flash any more (I am a full time mama and a part time website designer/retailer of kids's stuff).

What do you do now? other than sand old beds?

Nope, I don't think so. I was considering tinted wax after lots of sanding (E-Beaut do a walnut tint which should darken it down nicely). I will post a pic somewhere when it is done, still breathing paint dust right now.

I am still a member, and post in the lounge sometimes ...but finally quit from supermod and admin stuff ...didn't like the new owners penchent for in-thread advertising, posted links to ad-block stuff and they edited my post. So I made a big deal in the team room and handed in my passwords. It is pretty dead there these days.

I am (still) support manager for SWiSHzone.com, so still telecommuting after 8 years, and still with a job, even though the financial crisis bit deep.

Sounds like it went down hill badly! I have seen lots of new owners come into forums and they die a quick death.

I'll be keeping my eye out for photos :D
