oils aint oils

Hello all.

we use linseed oil to lightly rub the cues down once finished. and it seems to turn some timbers a redish yellow tinge, which sometimes is nice, but are there better options?

is there an oil you can rub into timber that will just give it a wet look, or like when you pour metho on it, as i think that would be better for some finishes.

Oil finishes vary by colour and by lustre when dry. If you want a light colour try Organoil DO but that dries flat. Feast Watson Scandinavian Oil will give a more glossy fnish but is darker.

If you just want minimal colouring and a wet look then look at several coats of ubeaut Hard Shellac. Good stuff.

thanks, looking at options that dont require shellac or paints, i am after a glossy finish but without the colouring, anyone know of others?

I'm curious, is there a specific reason you don't want to use shellac? :?

my suggestion: buy a few small tins of different oils and test them on the timber you use.

Hi Steve,
I found this, KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer No 244. It is recommended by Bungendore Wood Works Gallery. I purchased a small tin (100mls about $12) from a specialist store in West End. It is quite light and leaves a semi gloss finish.

Oils don't build to a gloss finish unless they've got a high proportion of resins, so you're effectively in the realm of paint.

Another product you could try is wipe on poly but I'm not sure how much shine it yields.

The minwax Wipe On Poly - Clear Gloss - prolly about two coats minimum

i didnt want a 'paint' style of covering as i dont want it to be prone to any chipping or effect from moisture like sweatty palms.
that wipe on polly looks like it might be good.

Not all linseed oils are the same. There are light coloured ones available .
You can also bleach the oil , by storing it in the sunlight in a tightly sealed clear container.
But in regard to the so called 'boiled oil', the colour may be due to the chemical dryers that are added to it .

Your local Bunnys store should have them, well they do south of the boarder anyway.
