Questions on Spraying Finish.

Hi Guys.

I recently purchased a 4 litre can of of Wattyl Industrial Coatings Stylwood 30% Satin and the equivalent size in Wattyl Industrial Thinners.

I have just finished making a Myrtle hall table with a Huon top and i am planning on spraying the finish above I have a 2HP compressor and a 1000cc pot Spray gun with a 2mm fluid nozzle and a pattern width of 180-250mm (have no idea what all that means bar the 1000cc part)

I was wondering if any woodies or poeple experienced in finishing could tell me.
A. The best ratio of Stylwood to thinners.
B. what PSI to set my compressor at (unfortunately i do not have the luxury of a HVLP)
C. The best settings for my gun for good if not great results.

Help would be greatly Appreciated.

I will be following this closely as I hope to make a new table and I want to give it about 7-8 coats and then sand it with wet and dry and then car rubbing compound. Saw it done at the Woodshow a few years ago and it was stunning!!

I do not know the product, but my thoughts generaly are that the fliud nozzle is a bit large I would be going for 1-1.5mm I would set the gun at about 60 psi, as with most things you have not used before do a test peice and adjust accordingly

Thanks for the heads up China, unfortunately the gun only came with a 2mm fluid nozzle. I can always make another trip to bunnings to purchase a 1-1.5mm but will it really make much difference?

The viscosity of the finish i am using would probably be slightly thicker than cooking oil before thinning.

Toby, I would say return the gun if possible and spend the $$$ on a gravity feed hvlp gun something with a 1.2-1.5 tip, you should be able to pick something up for <$80. Checkout ebay or a local auto paint supplier not bunnings.

HVLP will give you less overspray and being lower pressure will be easier on your compressor, 2HP will struggle with a regular gun..

Then find some scrap, set the pressure to your guns recommended setting and mix your finish in say a 3 to 1 ratio and start playing. Spraying is just as much and art as it is a science.

Once you get going try mixing different ratios. I normally vary from 4:1 to 1:1 depending on what i am doing (toning, building a finish or adding that final coat), and dont be afraid to bump up the pressure by 5psi to see what happens.

Dont forget to do a search on this forum theres a lot of good information on here about HVLP etc... and dont your safety gear!!!

I in in the usa Don't know about that stylwood If it is a lacquer ?? I do about 10% thinner Works for lacquer And a 2 mm nozel works for the hvlp sprayer I have the other unit also You use more air for those gun's like mention 60lb's probly would work What the amount of does if to much it will over spray or make' a lot of spray that goes no where not on the wood Experment on the amount of air Of course the thinner the mix is the less air you need so the right combo need to be made The pattern width is what the width of the fan spray on the wood look's like Or how wide it is You should be able to make it smaller Now when you do this their is a chance of run's in the finish so again the right combo What i would do is mix with 10% and start with 60 lbs of air see if you are getting finish comming out their should be a setting on the gun for more finish also Adjust tell you get a nice wet pattern Just below a run Try a board up right and spray so a nice finish is on it on one place Now spray more tell a run develope's Now you know how much you can do tell a run show's up Takes a little practice I been spraying for yrs And every now and than i get a run If you get a run let it dry Now sand it out Or Scrape it off and than sand so that it doesn't show Now do over again With no run's this time Good luck If you can get a hvlp They are cheep the small cup is all that i have and it is very good I use 20lbs of air and that is perfect form my lacquer With a 2mm nozel del

After looking at the price of that gravity feed i am pretty annoyed bunnings wanted $130 or so dollars for their trade air gravity feed.
Unfortunately i cant take the gun back as i have been doing test sprays on Huon all morning, even though its not a HVLP it still seems to be giving quite a nice finish at 60PSI after cutting back with U-Beaut EEE. However for the price of the HVLP off Ebay i will buy one anyway so thank you joez for the information and the link.

Thank you for all the info del schisler. I have been mixing wih 10% thinners at the moment and i am producing some decent quality finish. I have not yet experienced "Runs" this may be due to only spraying things horizontal not vertical would that be correct?

Toby, another thing, give the finish plenty of time to dry before rubbing back too much. The finish will continue to dry and flatten out for a few days. If you can still smell the finish its still off gasing and still drying.

Somethings a crappy finish will look brilliant 24-48 hours later...

I have now applied 4 coats to the hall table in individual pieces and now have assembled that was around 62 hours ago and i am about to go out to the shed and put on the final coats. cutting in between with EEE and p800 we and dry. i have some pictures of it already but i will wait till i have the finished pictures before i post. thanks for all of the great advice.
