Moving: Sydney to Hobart

I've been looking for work for the last 12 months with no success so I'm considering a move to Hobart.
I don't expect that work (IT admin) would be any easier to find there but I'd enjoy the scenery more.

Has anyone an idea of removal costs between Sydney/Hobart? Any carrier they'd recommend? Backhaul specialist? I'll get a proper quote once I decide just what I'll want (or need) to take with me.

It's in the early planning/feasibility stage at this point.

It's surprising really, after 20 years in the same place and collecting 'stuff', there's not a lot of it placed on the 'must have' list.

The passage across the ditch costs heaps and this is handed on to the customer. Forget about using a hire truck as I was quoted freight rates which were insane. From memory it was like $4k to bring a rigid pantech across. I found the cheapest way to do it is to use a hilux tray top or similar and tow a 8x5 box trailer. Book a shared cabin (dont even think about the cruise seats unless you can sleep anywhere) on the night trip.

If doing multiple trips put the trailer on the back of the hilux and lash it down for the trip back so you dont pay for the trailer.

I did three trips from port macquarie to hobart and it cost about $6k all up. Get rid of anything that you dont need and do a cost benefit analysis on your furniture. If its cheaper to buy new down here then get rid of it. I bought the trailer new for $1300 in albury and sold it for $1200 down here when finished.

Have fun. What part of hobart are you looking at. If you like rural(ish) then Margate to the south was voted the happiest place in tassie and has a number of delightful forumites living there. :2tsup:

I've come to the conclusion that getting a removalist involved is outside my budget!
For what they want to charge, I could make 3 or 4 trips from Sydney.

I don't currently have a car so was looking to get a large van or a small truck - the trailer is a good idea.

I did a walk through today and decided that most my furniture is not worth taking, other than the fridge and washing machine as both are fairly new. That just leaves the tools (lathe ,mill, power tools, etc) and my computer stuff.
There's also a motorcycle to consider. It's a non goer that I never had the space to restore so it's sat in the garden shed. Rather than unload it cheap here, I may get the chance to fit it up when I move.

The area I've been looking at, only because I spent the most time there, is around Huonville or Cygnet/Deep Bay. I've seen one place the sounded ideal, a couple of acres and 10x20metre shed on a concrete slab - what more does a man need. :2tsup:

Why go south when you can live in the temperate north of Tas, I moved from Sydney to Port Sorell Tasmania last July, used Grace Removals at an 8K cost. Sold off most of my large furniture pieces that were 15 - 20 years old for peanuts but still had a lot to move.

I purchased a two acre block with a shed on a concrete slab and now have a house at near frame completion stage.

This part of the world is a fantastic place to live and whilst it is pretty cool at night right now overall climate and lifestyle is much better than Sydney.

Just do it.

I figure I have a better chance of work in Hobart than elsewhere in Tassie. The move isn't for retirement unfortunately.

The other reason is that I've friends in Hobart and have spent some time over the last few years in the area around Huonville.

I think where the ute/trailer saves a lot is that cars etc are subsidised by the govt (not sure who) whereas transport (trucks, even small ones etc) are considered freight and pay full price.

South of Hobart is really going ahead and as a result Kingston is being bypassed so basically once you leave the last set of lights on Davey Street in Hobart its dual lanes and no stops till the Channel - toot toot :2tsup:

All very understandable reasons for settling for second best. :D

Over the past ten or so years I have travelled pretty extensively in Tas and haven't yet found anywhere that didn't impress me for one reason or another - the 'Do Not Return To' list has no entries. I'm sure you would be very happy wherever you might end up in Tas.

You might get a quote for a whole container to be shipped to TAS by road transport, when I was working there Tassie joinery firms were supplying the sydney building boom with joiney cheaper than the syd' companys could supply because of low labour & freight costs.

I've made a few inquiries regarding freight to Tasmania from Sydney and the cheapest answer is to load up the van and drive it there myself. OK, I'll have to buy the van first but you get the idea.

The best thing to come out of this exercise is that I'll get rid of a lot of unnecessary baggage. :)
