You need to watch Scott Cam on Backyard Blitz. He builds them all the time.
You're going to need a building permit, and footing design and proper drawings anyway.
Suggest you either go to the Council and ask a building surveyor if he can recommend someone, or look in the yellow pages.
A draftsman won't charge too much for the job, but you'll need engineer's soil tests as well....the Drafty will advise.
Sorry to be so helpful!!
Cheers,

If you cruise down to your local Mitre 10 they have "Fact Sheets" that give you the rough steps in doing various projects and they have a sheet on decks. It will give you a rough idea what you are up against. I think you can also access the info via their web page.
You will also need to have a full esky of beer next to the hammock that you will be in while you obviously whatch somebody else build it for you.
buy the book by allan staines. It is the best guide for building decks and pergolas.

what the Midge said! If you've never built a deck before then you don't want to be designing one as well. Go to the council and seee what their requirements are and then go to a drafty with your sketches, dimensions, plans of existing house and if possible, some digital pics of the proposed space.

You can get them off the net from mitre 10 tooQuote:
