Osage Orange

i believe there is a way to stop osage orange from changing to brown

hoping someone out there has the answer

I think it is similar to finishing purpleheart when trying to keep the purple. From memory, I think the answer was to use a uv-protectant, um, um, um, groan, can't remember.... sorry:doh: it's sunday afternoon and my brain is taking it off...:rolleyes:

I can't say for sure on osage orange as I haven't used it.
But generally speaking it changes due to oxygen or uv exposure. I know mulberry changes due to uv exposure and the osage orange I've seen has similar color to mulberry so that is where I would start.

I have made a few archery bows and a couple of tool handles with it and as far as I can tell it is one of the nicer woods to finish. Takes a very nice luster. As others have said the brown is most likley due to uv and or oxygen.I have only used oil and wax finishes on it but I like the look as it turns brown. I think it will brown whatever you use given time.
