masking/spraying stains

Great forum I just discovered. Anyway heres my question..
I restore old radios as a hobby, and have only recently delved into the timberwork side of it. I have a cabinet that I have stripped, repaired and prepared but I need to apply two thin stripes (2mm wide) of black stain before I apply the top nitrocellulose coat.
I have been experimenting with different spray techniques on scraps of timber, but have been unable to successfully mask up the stripe without bleedthrough. I am using Wattyl 'professional' series of stains. Should I be using a product specifically for spraying or will this do? I picked the best masking tape I could find that said 'no bleed' however I think half the problem is it acts like a sponge when wet..
Supplys of specialist stains etc are limited out here. It took me 3 days of blank looks just to find some nitrocellulose lacquer...

Stain the main body first then apply a coat of lacquer. Maskthis up and apply a black lacquer for the banding line. Then give it all a couple of coats of lacquer

yeah I think echinda has pretty much given you the best technique to employ. Although you can still use stain instead of opting for black laqcuer. Simply I would add some black stain to the laqcuer so its still opaque.
