Bronze plaque renovation

Does anyone have any idea how to renovate a bronze plaque? It has been out in the weather for 20 years and looks dull and the colour on the letters is mottled. I dont know if the colour is an applied finish or if the background is an applied finish that is rubbed off the tops of the letters. Any ideas?
