Plastering around window

I exposed an interior window frame in a living room wall and need to plaster around the existing frame in order to leave the opening intact. Will need to do minor framing, but was wondering if metal lath is required to have a rounded appearance and what material is used to achieve the rounded look ie) cement, mortar, etc. Any ideas would be appreciated as I am new to plastering. Thanks...Ted
