Gyproc Ceiling

I am replacing an old ceiling with new Gyproc one and wondering if I need the metal tracks that are used nowadays or not.

There are no existing tracks as the old ceiling was directly fixed and strapped.

Can anyone tell me if its safer, easier or longer lasting to use the tracks?
