I've got several pieces of a nice walnut burl veneer. I can't get it to take a shine using Minwax's WipeOn Poly Gloss. When it dries it is blotchy with a flat finish. I've sanded it down and redone it but it always dries with flat blotchy spots.
Any ideas? I really want to be able to use this burl veneer but I can't if it won't shine-up.

How old is the Poly? Has it been used before with success?

I think you're Poly may have degraded. There's no reason why it should work well on one timber any more than another.
Depending on the quantity left in the can and on storage conditions, it may have "gone off". People often find that it stays sticky after application if this is the case. A new can and that should fix the issue.

How did u glue the veneer to your substrate?
What type of glue did you use?
Was there any bleedthrough once you glued it up??

Wallnut is an oily timber and should have been wiped with a thinner of sorts even if just Metho to dry the oil out before applying any finish.
I used Titebond III and there was no bleedthrough. I laid down the glue with a brush and covered the substrate (Birch Plywood). I then put it in a veneer press that I made. Pretty much the same process that I've done with other veneers.Quote:
