What is the best way to finish a 50m post and rail iron bark timber fence so that it does not turn into the old grey timber look.... oil, clear eurathane, marine polyurethane, whatever?
I would like to preserve the beautiful natural colour of the timber that you get when it is wet and new.
I would appreciate all ideas and suggestions, and even photos of existing fences that retained their natural colours

Three coats of epoxy followed by three coats of marine grade polyurethane varnish to keep the UV out. Scuff sand and re-varnish every few years.
If you have to ask 'How much will that cost?', you won't want to know!
You may be able to get away with just polyurethane varnish, but you may get more timber degradation. Buy your varnish from a marine shop, not Bunnies.
Check the boating forums to see how well it holds up.
Actually, decking oil may work to some extent - the Flood Co puts out the stuff the timber decking people like: The Flood Company Australia
seriously... just don't bother....any clear finish you could reasonably put on will look very uggly very quickly.
clear finishes on exposed timber have a very short life, and are very high maintenance..... and that is on properly prepared, milled timber......on rough timber noone has that much time and money
If you like the "pretty" timber look...... buy a preasure cleaner....and make it a good one.
