You are getting ready to glue up several boards for a table top. Whether you use biscuits or a blind spline is up to you as they are only used to keep the boards even. You have heard the saying read the boards before assembly.
What does this mean to you?

to me as Ivan stated looking at the subtlies and the glaringly obvious of the timbers I am attempting to mate. Very hard to list all of it as it's a feeling, knowledge that gets better with experience, but some off the top of my bald scone are.....
*Species, single or mixed
*heart side/sap side, do I need to alternate or not
*colour variation,
*grain/figure
*its position within the log/growth structure
*density/ring spacing
*end use, position in piece, strenght etc
*glues and coatings to be used
*the time of the year
and despite all this and more I can still st#ff it up. :eek:

Congratulations Bruce C. You have named all the important phases in prepping your wood for assembly, with the correct answer. Didn't think there were so many ways to read the wood and you may have taught others the correct methods.
