Change mains power sockets

Does anyone think that in future all plugs and sockets may/will change? For example, a bit like an RJ45 female socket, you can fit RJ10/RJ12 male into RJ45, but you can't fit RJ45 male into RJ10 female.
Maybe mains power needs to be the same. A power point with a max. amperage should have a certain socket that can fit any device that will not exceed a certain draw/threshold. Am I making sense here?
This could eliminate bodgy jobs such as running long power leads to your shed via conduit. You could run it, but only up to a certain length/distance. If you want to go further, you have to use a power lead with a bigger socket/plug and thicker wire inside...but you can plug smaller appliances into it as they use the smaller male fitting which fits into the larger female socket.
A power board could only handle six appliance...and you can't piggy back another powerboard in because it won't fit into the smaller females on the first powerboard.
If all leads were prefabbed this may start to eliminate overloading issues.
Do the professionals here think this sounds a bit far fetched? Will this idea swim or sink?
