how could I refinish this piece?

It wasn't expensive to buy.
The desk top itself is laminated mdf I think...unfortunately we've had heaps of rainfall in Tasmania la and this little gem was stuck out in itso the mdf is swollen.
Is this a teak timber? and would it be hard to find a veneer to lay over some mdf for the table top...or is there another way??
the rest of the table is quite solid.
