TBO is going to buy some whipper-snipper line for our whipper-snipper and asked me a question I couldn't answer. Is all whipper-snipper line the same, or are there different diameters and compositions for different machines/purposes?

Hi WW.

Here in America we call them grass trimmers. although whipper-snipper sounds classier.

There are different diameters that can be had depending on the machine...best to use what is recommended by your manufacturer.:U

Thanks Aussie. Ours is purple, so I guess that's significant then.

Thanks Ed. The handbook is in A Very Safe Place, hence my query. :U

If the whipper-snipper (for Poms - strimmer) is electric, the line is likely to be 1.6mm - the last lot I bought was purple.. Petrol engine driven versions often have thicker line.

You could look for the booklet on the manufacturer's website.

There's also the straight round line and the square corned line which cuts more efficiently. :2tsup:

I always thought you called them weed wackers a la Tim The Toolman.

The best one I have found is called Diamond Edge usually only available from certain Mower Specialists.

I find it doesn't break off even when running along a rabbit proof netting fence and that seems to be the hardest test on any line.

The cheap ones from Big W and Kmart are crap.

If Her Maj' is still on the way to get some line, the best bet is to take the line drum off, then separate & clean the outer shell - the bit with the grommets in that the line has to go thru'. Put it in a plastic bag & get Her Maj' to take it into the shop with her.

Most rolls of line have a free end that you can check - just see if it will go thru the grommet, if it doesn't then it is too thick, try next size down. I've noticed that every brand seems to use a different colour system, yellow in one brand may be 1.6mm but could be 2.5mm in another.

Thanks. We now have two different sizes of line to try tomorrow if the weather picks up.

Tip from a line trimmer supplier: accelerate slowly. The line will last longer.

...

A mystery of the universe that matches where odd socks go is why there isn't metres of the stuff visible in the yard. I'll usually exhaust a spool around the suburban block.

Thanks Ern. I don't accelerate at all these days, so the line should last a while.

the reason you dopnt find it is is dosent break off in lengths it slowly wares down.

the line should last indefinatly if juts cutting soft grass if starts to wear when you gt into heavy thick grass and along fences.

i do a couple of 2 acre padocks that are to rocky to slash. if i do them every 3 weeks in teh summer a 3m length of string will last atleast all day. if i leave them for more than a mounth and the stalks gt thick i use 2 lengths.

Weed wackers for sure in the real world, but go to buy one and you have to ask for a grass trimmer:o:doh::D:D:D

Had a guy return some whipper snipper line at Bunnies the other day. It wrecked the head of his petrol powered Stihl whipper snipper and just about amputated his right foot at the ankle. Turns out he'd bought plastic coated wire strand clothesline .
