Responses to my recent Post on this forum (FOR SALE VICMARC LATHE) have been most interesting.

It is evident that 'prozac' knows everything about everything and is the self appointed protector of everyone's sensibitities.
The wording of my for sale notice was intended to deter idiotic responses such as 'prozac's', but clearly failed to break through what appears to be a very dense vault.
I suggest 'prozac' read 'col's' note and consider the value of his wisdom. 'Col' has clearly, been there and done that - and learned from the experience.
'Prozac' has yet to learn the value of quitting when beaten.
He/she just loves to see his/her opinions in print.

'Robyn' how distressing that you found my wording to be rude!
I refer you also, to 'col's' note above. Furthermore, your ill considered comments suggest that one's right to be definitive is determined by the number of posts lodged on this forum.
Is that really the situation? (Retorical - please do not respond)

Finally, to satisfy the curious.
I bought the lathe and accessories for $650.00.
It has now been sold for the asking price, without any haggling, by someone who was not offended by my words. (9.30 a.m.)
Proving that, something for sale is worth what someone else will pay for it. (Regardless of the asking price.)

I have been an avid reader of Posts and Threads on this forum since joining and over time have formed the opinion that some of the writers would do well to be less critical and mind their own business unless they have something constructive to contribute.

I thought it was rude too:?, congratulations on selling your lathe, let us know what you end up with when you purchase your new one. Post some pics of your work too. Will you be following this thread or leaving it like the others you have started?

Sorry to be rude but i was hoping to get an answer to my questions but apparently, someone who asks a question and expects an answer doesnt warrant a response from you whereas someone - who has a bit of an idea about how this forum operates (been around a while) - who tries to guide you in a less agressive direction can get a response.

Dont bother with a response to this i can tell when someone is up themselves.

Cheers

I have witnessed some disgraceful attempts by people to get prices down by PMs to sellers - including myself. I have even had someone try to convince me that I should mail a FREE item to them FREE of postage as I advertised it as a FREE giveaway :~ .

I've also heard of members trying to get lower prices from deceased member's families when the prices are more than reasonable.

I didn't want to wade into this particular discussion, but be aware that the behaviour of some of the so called 'members' leaves a lot to be desired at times. A for-sale notice is just that, the seller sets his terms and the buyer agrees with them. If the seller doesn't want hagglers then he is at liberty to say so.

The discussion here should really be focused on how politely he should say this. Once it crosses into that area it should become a reported post for the poor old moderators to worry about.

Here in the US we have an expression.

Oh dear I have to be both polite and PC, so I'll rephrase, as polite as possible.

"Money talks, road apples or used oats walks."

The words that 'unwise' used are much better than the above.

FWIW - I've experienced the hagglers also. They rarely want to buy but rather want to feel important because someone answers their e-mail.

Now that unwise has sold the lathe, it would be nice if he/she became a regular contributor to the forum.

If you hang around long enough you'll realise that there is a curtain element on this board that can only be described as being monkeys. And they're unapologetically proud of it... Trust me pushing water up hill with a rake would be far more constructive than trying to enlighten them. The board offers an idiot filter - you might want to familiarize yourself with it.

long story Cliff - search "vicmarc sale" and put that thread and this together.

I suppose the question that I would ask is how much would the lathe have cost to buy new? If the buyer has saved a favourable amount of money then it isn't so important that the seller made 500+%profit providing that the machine was in good nick.

Of course the manner of which the original ad' was worded, and wether or not people are using the forum purely as a salesyard is a different argument alltogether.

Yes, thankfully we have them to balance the arrogant, self-important tossers that we also have our fair share of :)

Something doesn't add up here.

$5 to 6000 new, $3500 2nd hand is the price of a VL300, not a VL850.

VL850 are discontinued & they were selling for about $1K (2nd hand) 3 or 4 years ago.

If somebody paid $3500 for a 2nd hand VL850, I have a 1960 Model Series IIA Landrover that I'd like them to have a look at. :D

That makes it easier to form some opinion.

I think the quote goes something like:

"Civility costs nothing and buys everything"

Maybe there should be a 20th century online version which says:

"Obnoxiousness costs nothing and sells everything".

Zed hasn't been on here for a real long time.
Also what is a curtain element? Is it commercially available or do I need to make my own? Do I need one? Can I afford one?

Who took my peanuts?

cur-tain elˇeˇment [ curtain élləmənt (http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/Pronounce.aspx?search=element) ] (plural cur-tain elˇeˇments) n. any element that is used to surround or shield an area of vacuum or matter with the express purpose of excluding other elemental particles.
Iron (Fe) is an exceptionally good curtain element and can repel most other elemental particles. Hydrogen (H) on the other hand is very poor and can only keep out weak or sick elemental particles of other hydrogen atoms.

a small area of vacuum can be used to clean the elemental curtains.

(not really)
This thread really needed hijacking to stop it coming to blows. Or, better still whilst speaking of vacuum, it sucked (get it? blow - suck:wink:) until we began discussing something that Toolin Around mentioned, ie Curtain elements.
I still want to know where I can buy one. If you close it Watson, I'll have to send a PM to Wendy.:D
