Ok,
Just been warned by a good friend that we are going out in Sydney to some "velvet rope, you won't get in if you are not dressed correctly" places.
Its my big, welcome back to Australia thing... apparently.

I'm living out of two kit bags at the moment, and have been doing so since January... I need some serious advice on where to buy a set of clothes suitable for a silvertail from the North Shore or Yarraville.

I don't think my $3 'car tyre' sandals and 'had these for 7 years' going out pants and shirt with the frayed seams, will cut it.

Help.... I've got to get rigged out like a flash Sydney lair with more $ than sense, and I'm more of a Far North Queensland banana cutter with a dash of Central Qld ringer thrown in.

After a weekend on the cocktail bars and restaurants, its 2 days of leisure with a North Shore Dame (an actual Dame, honour and award kind of thing) who will be taking the poor deprived soldier lad to the galleries and other suitable places.. and to introduce me to her crowd and let me talk about some things I've been doing here.

Again... she has been telling me I need some more suitable clothing, and has been offering to have her son buy me some cloths and that she will bring it over.

So.... where is the well dressed nob going these days in Sydney town?

Serious.... I need help! :oo:

If you can cope with the mincing serving staff, and can commit to the expenditure never being useful again, go to Five Ways Fusion in Paddington.

If you want something more long-lasting that you may be able to use again - go to Henry Buck's in O'Connell St in the City . They may be a Melbourne shop originally, but their stuff is really good quality and can be worn outside Sydney....:U

Good luck

Clint

Gentlemen do not buy 'off the peg' clothes and I fear you may have left it too late for a bespoke tailor.

Hire clothing!! Lets not even go there.

PM me if you're up for a beer whilst in the emerald City

If they wont take you the way you normally dress, you don't want to go there mate

Tell 'em "take me as I am or leave me where you found me" :)

You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't...

OK, I'll stop now.

How 'bout Gowings? :p

Mate not sure what you mean by Velvet rope? If its an S&M thing you can get a good latex suit from the shop besides the HellFire club at Surrey Hills.

If you want some decent threads though I would try Tarocash on Oxford Street...infact you you cant get decent cloths on Oxford Street your :

1. Are lacking a pulse and hence dead
2. Big fat and ugly
3. A bogon
4. So homophobic that you aren't game to use the change rooms.

Yes Oxford Street is how do you say...quite colourful...........

Thanks all, there is more than enough suggestions to have a crack.

Yes, I usually go "the man inside, not the superficialities" route however, this time I am on someone elses turf and will be going to places that they consider important.

Thanks for all the suggestions... I'll only have a few hours before starting the weekend's adventures, which is a few hours longer than I usually spend on buying clothing.

in fact, if you can't get decent cloths on Oxford Street your:

5. a tight wad that is just not really interested. :D

BT he wants to be decked out like a snob, not look like he's going to a dance party!

I've got a mate who lives in Balmoral. I'll ask him where he shops. :)

I regret to inform SilentC that Gowings is no more, and hasn't been for a few years now.

Buying? Black pants, white shirt, tie & bow tie, black shoes - Lowes.

Hire the jacket. You will then be covered for most 'formal' occasion for the next 20 years. DJ's & Myer have hire departments & can hire you the lot, except for sox & jox.

Yeah I heard they'd gone belly up. Not that I was ever a Gowings shopper - I used to shop at DJs or this little place in the walking tunnel between Wynyard and Pitt Street back when I wore monkey suits.

Yeah I heard they'd gone belly up. Not that I was ever a Gowings shopper.

I suspect that there are a number of people that could say the same thing, hence the logical outcome!

Some people blame the government when jobs are lost, I blame the shoppers!

Cheers,

Actually in that case, I think the problem was they tried to expand and the world wasn't ready for a shop that sold clothes, camping gear, strange nick nacks and bath ducks...

When it was just that single shop in George street, they did very well - survived two World Wars and god knows how many changes in fashion. Someone got greedy and killed the golden goose.

wear your class 1's and service ribbons. scowl at the bouncer in a "dare you to not let me in your prick..." I betcha you get in before your mates.

I bet you'll drink for free too...

Nah, it is not a velvet rope and rubber wear kinda place, and wearing uniform and ribbons is not on the cards... worn a uniform all year and intend to slide right into 'normal life' for a while.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions, I've gotten a good range of options - and all are close to where I'll be staying.

As for catching up... I'd like to do that but may be limited by time... I'll be running around like a mad chook as it is.

I have 3 and a half weeks off, but only 4 or 5 days in Sydney.

I'm being 'organised' by friends, so I'll find out what the program is and see if we can get together for a cold one?

After a year of mostly 16 hour days, and only 25 days "out of country"... I'm willing to dress like a flash larrikan to unwind a little.

Again, thanks all... although SilentC... be interested in seeing where your mate goes to get his stuff.

Welcome back to Oz, Clinton.
You have the good oil from other blokes, just wanted to thank you & your mates for the work you've done on our behalf in Timor Leste.

I was going to go with Zed's suggestion, but can understand you wanting to wear civvies for a while.
