Hi Sheddy,
Rolls-Royce hey, I have a 1980 Silver Shadow 2, had it for 16 years now, the best car I have ever owned,It is very difficult to get out of one of those and get into your every day car. What are you up to........... want to buy one?

The reason I ask is that some years ago I came into possession of a genuine cast alloy Rolls Royce key tag. It has the RR logo on the front and Made in England (c) on the back. Just wondered if it would be a swappable item for a Roller owner.
Cheers

If it's the one I think it is, should be a gold colour with black RR in the centre, Is eliptical shape I think from memory. I purchased one at a swap about 10 years ago, think it was about $10.00. A lot of people collect these and hub caps etc. to put on the lounge room mantle piece. Out of interest a hub cap in VG to Excellent condition will bring around $50 - $80 at a swap meeting; A new one from RR in England is $1280.00 as of 3 months ago when I last priced it.
Actually, i just realized that you are a Tasweggian, this time last year I travelled with the RR club to Tassie for 12 days holiday and covered just on 2,000 miles around the apple isle, there were 13 cars all together, you may of seen us in your travels.
I only use mine a few times a year, in fact I had it out of the shed one weekend in September and thats the only time since the Tassie trip.If you look after them, maintenance wise, they are not an expensive car to own, you obviously need another daily driver as you cannot leave a roller parked on the side of the road for long, especially at night time, because you will end up with a scratch down the side, Anyway all the best for now, if I keep going I could talk about RR's all night.
Cheers,
Ron.

Gra,
Interesting to see you like Rileys and Graham Paige's, both excellent old cars, next door neighbour had a 1928 graham Paige when I was a kid, about 1928 model. and friends of the family had a 1952 Riley; a beautiful car always promised myself one, but haven't got there yet. Noticed the graham Paige emblem under your name and figured you were interested.
Cheers,

Ron, Have a look at the link in my sig to my other toys, that will keep you bus for a while. Were did you grow up? Are curious about anyone that remembers a graham as they weren't a common car.
What sort of body did it have, hard top or soft, can you remember?
As for Rileys, only an admirer, never convinced the boss to let me buy one. Tried to get an RM when I sold the MG, ended up with a jag (She wanted air con)

due to the financial constraints that the lending authorities put upon myself when single and free and strangly cashless even then I could never afford these my favorites were MK V Jaguar drop head coupe and the beautiful Alvis. Man I sound old but they dont build em like they used too. NO pride these days. But I did have a sucsession of Minis one I bought for $500 and 3 years later sold as fastest road reg. Mini in NZ for mega bucks but still was out of pocket big time. But Hey the fun

About 50 years ago my father worked for York Motors, who were the RR dealers then (may still be?). A toffee-nosed bloke came in wanting a hub cap for his roller, but whinged about the cost of a new one, and hinted that he'd appreciate it if he could get a 'used' one that was a bit cheaper.
The spare parts bloke took the hint and suggested he come back in a couple of days time.
When the owner came back, a used one had been 'found' at a satisfactory price, but the owner then put in an order for another one. "Some bestard has stolen another one."
Coincidence or just bad luck? Who knows.

Hi Gra,
Sorry, I read that you were into Jaguars and not Rileys and was thinking about PTC'c comments when I replied.
Was born in Stawell, and spent all my life here except for five years when I started as a woodwork teacher in Swan Hill, Melbourne, and Maryborough. The Graham Paige the neighbour had was 1928, hard top (very unusual as I recall) painted dark green and used to be immaculate in paintwork and the frilly fabric on the upholstery, even had little pull down curtains on the side windows. He kept it for probably 5 - 6 years then swapped for a 1948 Riley, which he eventually smashed up some years later. The Graham was sold to probably the biggest no-hoppers in Stawell, no money, filthy dirty obviously no baths or showers, thrashed the car and it was wrecked after about six weeks................... would make you cry ! At that stage I was only about 14 - 15, but would have loved to have been in a position to have purchased it. I have seen about three or four in the last thirty years, all soft top, I think they were on display at Ballarat or Bendigo Swap meets. They were a great car, unfortunately were never the same once dodge came into the picture, I think they only lasted a short time then folded completely.
Cheers,
Ron.

Tony,
I remember when I was going to primary school, a teacher from the tech school, was restoring an alvis, just up the end of our street. I have never seen one since that day, they were a monstorous car, big headlight, heavy solid doors, and I think they may have had suicide doors too from memory. Still a few of your favourite Jag's around but once again big money if not restored, they used to have a steering wheel the size you would expect in a truck.Lindsay Fox has 3 - 4 in his museum at the Docklands in Melbourne
Cheers,
Ron

Ron,
all 28's are rare in this country.... thought hard tops seem to have survived better, and all green ones, don't know what it is but 95% of the 28's have been painted green. If you saw a soft top Graham at Bendigo it more than likely would have been us (Two tone green and wire wheels). There is the remains of a Graham in camperdown (So bad we left it there...), maybe your old stalwell car..
As for dodge, they never were involved in Graham paige, the Graham bros made Dodge truck under license till about 24-25, then sold the business back to dodge. With the money from that they purchase the paige car company. in 1930 they dropped the paige name. Post WW2 they became Kaiser-Fraser. The Co is still around, it owns Madison Square Gardens.
Better shut up now or I could go on all night..
PS.. Tonto, my father had a MK 5 sedan when I was growing up, it is one of the reasons I own a jag now. The purchase list went Mk5, Riley RM, XJ6

Geez, what have I started.
I once had an uncle (by marriage), Alex McFarlane, who was an engineer (or could have been a coach builder) for Rolls Royce until his retirement. When he left they presented him with a beautiful Riley (it was real dark green) with number plates RR 001. He lived in Campbelltown NSW. He's been dead more than 20 years now with no heirs so I have no idea what happened to the car. He took my 1st wife and I for a very exhilarating run in it. Beautiful car. Whenever I see one (theres a couple running around down here) it brings back those memories.

Driver you have taste, someone in Melbourne was making a car that looked somewhat like that with modern V8 mechanicals, the body had had an update, but still looked great and period. Dont know how the project went though

Hi Gra,
Back again, that's interesting about Dodge involvement, I never really studied that. Without being sarcastic, when you own a Jag you step down into them, when you own a rolls you simply just step into them.......... sorry.
Cheers,
Ron.

Yes you do step down into them, then settle down ready to DRIVE. as opposed to sitting on the car:D:D.
I know what you mean though, I regularly go from the Jag to the Graham and the difference takes you a while to get used to, though it is better than when I went from the Graham to the MG...:oo:

The Driver,
Bugatti of course..................... now that is a car.
Did you see, by some chance the programme on tele the other night, from overseas, 'TOP GEAR', where the have just produced this one off bugatti,Jerremy put it through its paces, unbelievable top speed of about 480 miles an hour, cost around 5 million or so, sorry I didn't tape it , it was excellent. There is a web site on the internet under 'bugatti' well worth a look, don't be in a hurry though it takes a long time to load up.
Cheers,
Ron.

sounds like pur-sang... They got the engineering diagrams for the type 35 and reproduced them.. The whole car......
Have heard an original Type 35 driven in anger, that is a sound I will never forget...... I want one, I just don't want the maintenance or the brakes..
Quote from Ettore Bugatti - We make them to go, not to stop.
I have started another thread about what car you wished you kept.. instead for hijacking Shedies thread..

Gra,
Another thread sounds good, its surprising how things get along, we are up to 25 threads here tonigh and its proved very interesting, I'm sure Sheddie won't be upset at all. Just briefly checked out your own web site, very interesting I will spend more time and go through it thoroughly. I;ll have to call it quits as I have a CT Scan early tomorrow followed later by more blood tests, then onto chemo next week,
OK, Cheers for now,
Ron.

That was 5 million pounds.:oo: and they made 6 of them. Wish i had one:D Jerremy said it was the best car ever made and will never be bettered.
Thats one of the best shows on telly (:( last show last night for the series :( ) In not a rev head, in fact cars bore me like woodturning dose, but i never miss Top Gear, never.
Best one was when the "power mountin climbers" raced Jerremry to the top of the mountin (took 2 hours) for 5 quid and double or nothing to go back down and the climber based jumped to victory:D

Ron, Bugatti Veyron it's called. 8000ccW16 with 4 turbos, 1007 hp, 4WD, nearly 2 tons and a top speed of 407km/h. I think...
I'd rather have a Koenigsegg myself. Just as mental engine wise (4000cc V8, supercharged and 8-900hp) in a car that weighs half as much with half the number of driven wheels. And still does nearly/over 400km/h.
(I'd be really happy with just another car for Mrs. Schtoo and the little fella really, but since we are hijacking AND dreaming all at once, why not go all the way? :D )

Heya Rona - nice ride you have there. I've always hankered to have a Silver Cloud in the shed, but a Shadow would be fab. That cranky Jeremy bloke off Top Gear drove one into a swimming pool.
We saw you lot several times, as my sister and BIL were travellinig about in our Kombi and we met up with them here and there. They were in the same motel at Port Arthur, and admired your vehicles. D'you remember seeing a tidy olive Kombi there? Good luck with the chemo mate - my Ma has come out the other side of 9 months for bowel concer - not all clear yet, but looking much better than it was. Hope to see you back in that Rolls over here mate - I'd love a drive!

Tassie Kiwi,
Yes I do remember seeing the kombi, my mate from Numurkah in Victoria has and Orange one and it was that that drew mat attention to yours.
If I remember rightly at port Arthur you were parked right up the end past all the RR near the fence. They were a great camper in there day, A cousin drove one from WA rigt around Australia and back again to WA for a holiday, never missed a beat.
Steve,
I remember the Borgward when they first came out, very stylish for there time, performed well were only a few around though, the four door car was more popular and possibly cheaper, they actaully made a diesel model at on stage, only lasted a short time though.
Thanks to lignum and schtoo for correcting the various parts of the Bugatti story, I actually missed the first five minutes which annoyed me.
Cheers for now,
Ron.

You have under estimated how much of a car nerd I am... Not only do I know what they are, I tried to chase one down for my father, until he decided on something else.... (I think he couldn't afford the divorce)
