I dont think you can change the region on the disc but I think you can get a mod chip.
With the price of the new DVD players and the fact that most are multi region, it is prolly cheaper to buy a new DVD player.

If you want to go to the trouble you can make region free copies easy enough.
If you want to know how PM me.

Do a bit of a search on google for your model player, you may find its already region free.
Alternatively, if you have a DVD drive in your PC, many of those are region free, if not, you can download a program called 'anydvd' that allows you to play, well, as the name might suggest, 'any' dvd. It works great too!

I belioeve it's possible to modify some players, but I do know that people that were modifying playstations have gone to ground after threatened with legal action, so it might be hard to find someone to do it. There is another, convoluted way around it, if you have a DVD burner in your computer.
You need to fit another, brand new DVD ROM drive to the computer. You insert your region 1 disc in it at which point it will ask you if you want to change the drive to read region 1 discs. You can only change the region of drives a few times before they lock. I know some people who have a DVD ROM drive specifically for playing/copying movies from overseas. You may also need to get different software to copy the discs if they are decrypted. PM me if you want help. It may be all too much trouble, especially if you're not planning on buying discs from other regions again.

The ACCC's opinion on region coding on DVDs is that region coding breaches the trade practices act, so feel free to modchip/firmware update (http://www.askmerlin.org/) knowing that it is not a grey area (http://www.consensus.com.au/ITWritersAwards/ITWarchive/ITWentries02/C1CaitlinFitzsimmons.htm).
In a related note, the copy protection on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD has also been beaten, so the three people out there with both players and content can now make copies so that when the HDCP encryption handshaking fails, the movie won't drop out halfway through.

:- You posted while I was typing :B Never bothered with it myself, but have some friends that have been at it for a while, possibly before other, more streamlined methods were available.
