He seems like a nice guy, but boy, he really had to play hard tonight. I reckon Gonzo played brilliantly. Every time I see Federer play he seems to do it easily - I can't say I have seen him played against so hard for a long time.

Yeah, Roger is a champion but he's not a great player just yet. I didn't like what he said about Gonzales - basically saying he was an unworthy opponent. I hope Federer isn't becoming arrogant. :no:

Dunno about Federer saying Gonazalez was unworthy. Certainly in the pre match thing he said well I have beaten him and you can't improve that much in 6 months and so on bordered on arrogance perhaps but might just have been his honest reading of the situation.

Was there something I missed?

Anyway Gonzo put up some good points and had he made returns rather than getting over excited and clubbing them off into the crowd he might have pushed Federer into 4 or 5 sets.

IMHO I like Federer he is an awesome player. I reckon he will eventually break just about every record there is in tennis. I wish I could play a tenth as good as him but I guess we cant have everything we want.

Lleyton Hewitt just may never reach top five again. He does not have a ''weapon'' anymore. Still a good player no doubt, he has nothing more to achieve in tennis, been #1 and held it for a good amount of time. He does seem to come across as a bit of a brat and that aint cool, here comes the

on our way back from the US in September of 2005 we were trudging along the international terminal of Sydney airport when the missus says 'Hey look who is walking beside us. It was Lleyton and Bec strolling hand in hand smiling happily. Cameron, my then fiour year old, runs over and says 'Lleyton I love you' well it would have been so easy for him to just grunt at him and say sorry not interested but he did not. He stopped put down his bags and chatted to Cam for about five minutes, Bec chatted with Erica (SWMBO) who just melted at the sight of Becs engagement ring.

For me this means more than any crap that could happen on the tennis court. I know Erica and I will always remember the meeting but mostly Cameron does not go more than two days without telling us what Lleyton had said to him. Cameron is now about to turn six and goes to tennis four times a week, a two hour session on Saturday mornings and half hour after school three days. All because of a chance meeting that has inspired him. Job done Lleyton thankyou for taking the time.

Great story Pete :2tsup: Im sick of all the anti Hewitt wingers out their. I love watching him play as he is one of the most guttsiest sportsmen we have ever seen in this country. Id rather watch him anyday over the ultra boaring Federer

Used to read Patrick Smith but I got fed up with always calling Hewitt "Little Leyton". Stopped reading him after all Hewitt has managed to do something and with a lot less in the way of size and strength than a lot of other players out there. Patrick Smith is yet to write anything that stands up to fair examination.

Anyway Hewitt doesn't have it at the moment, I mean enough to win a Grand Slam Event but he could get it back together and win one again. I hope he does he is one of the gutsiest guys out there. I can put up with the C'Mon's he doesn't do that to his opponents and he doesn't go over to the crowd and call for them to be on his side.

Thing about Hewitt is that his two greatest assets are that he is very quick and he has a bit of the mongrel in him - he lifts when he has his back against the wall. As he gets older, he is going to find it harder to win because his game is not about skillful shots, it's about chasing everything down.

Federer on the other hand hardly raises a sweat and he is just clinical. That game last night was very unusual for him, he made a lot of unforced errors. Jim Courier reckoned it was because of the wind, but I reckon he was nervous. I think he's one of those people who is like a duck swimming on a pond. All calm and serene on the surface but going like mad underneath.

Still, I think he walked it home. Gonzales fought hard but was outclassed. It was an easy win for Federer - straight sets only one break. He's just too good to be really troubled by the likes of Gonzales. Which is a shame because I liked the way G. played and would have liked to have seen him at least win a couple of sets.

I thought that Gonzales was a bit tight. He seems like the sort of player who is best when he just enjoying the match. Last night I think he was worrying too much about it to be his best.

Federer wasn't perfect himself as said. Imagine if Gonzales had of held serve to win the first? Would have been a whole new game for Federer not having even lost a set all tournament and who knows what could have happened

Same thing with Shane Warne the first game back after the drug ban. Playing for local club side StKilda, Mass media everywhere from every outlet and even the pommy press, and he spent 2 hours with the kids joking and signing autographs then grabbed a quiet moment before he was to play and had a smoke (by himself) under a tree. Next day the front page of the Hun had headlines to the effect "warne back from drug ban" and showed a photo of him under the tree smoking. Talk back callers all day got stuck into him, leters in the following days paper the same. But no one mentioned the few hours of his time giving all them kids pleasure:(
