View Full Version : What floats your boat?

Hey there,
I was thinking about a recent thread regarding pet hates, and while I'll acknowledge there's something about getting it all off your chest, it can be a bit of a downer to concentrate on the negatives!!:D So in the interest of balance (Zen man..!) I think we should look at what gets you going, what excites you, what floats your boat!?
Me personally, I like it when a chisel or gouge I've just sharpened actually works better. I mean really, noticeably, s l i c e s. I like early mornings in spring when there's a nip in the air but the sun promises a warm day.:) I really like it when a plan comes together, like yesterday with my sliding metal assembly. And I especially like it the way beer and blues music socket together like...like....like a neat cut m&t. Sit back in the shed with some Hound Dog Taylor and XXXX!!

Cheers,

Good thread Andy.

I like this time of year down here, with the cherry blossoms out.

Love getting great customer service.

Love a great coffee.

Love completing something (doesn't happen enough :o)

Love a bargain.

Cheers......................Sean

Good one Andy!

Woodie stuff first (naturally!):

The fine swish of a plane blade through hard Aussie timber
The 'snick' of a chisel cutting a joint
The sense of achievement when some joinery comes together just as you'd hoped it would (an event less frequent than I'd like:o )Other stuff:

The taste and aroma of a fine wine
A great meal
A good lie-in
Being told (at work) that, "Wow! you know your stuff" (another infrequent event:rolleyes: )
Watching a pretty lady saunter by...
Being my own boss at home!Heaps more too :D

That feeling of accomplishment after a hard days work, with sore muscles fed by lamp chops, a beer even (a beer BEFORE a feeds best), feet up.... bit of nooky latters nice if I'm lucky (fat chance that she'll be in a good mood too though. )

That confidence in knowing whats going to happen,,,,and not being surprised when it does work out, so I don't have to pretend I meant to do it. Blissful stuff that.

I really enjoy staring up at the stars in the dead of the night having a leak...clean air, deep breathes, no noise....sounds funny, but it have to be one of the most pleasurable and relaxing experiences that.....don't laugh, I'm serious,,,,, AHHHHHHhhhhhhh,,,oh ,ahhhhh .....

Watching my two daughters grow up, I just love it when they get to figure something out for themselves, makes my week!

I know it won't last forever, the eldest is only a year away from becoming a teenager, so I'll love it while it lasts!

Otherwise, I really have to admit, I love showing my dungeon workshop to people in person, they see a hatch in the floor of the parking area, and when they go down there and see what I've done and the tools etc down there, the eyes just pop, a neat thing, I feel better about all the work I've done down there.

I also love getting a chance to just set on the sofa with my wife and watch something of interest to both of us on the TV, don't happen much, but sometimes.

Otherwise, after a good BBQ party, with good friends, sitting around outside on the rooftop sun deck, telling lies with good buddies, enjoying that last fine tumbler of 40 year old single malt, while enjoying a fine cigar.... yep, that is good!

Cheers!

A beautiful Spring Saturday when I'm out enjoying the first coffee and the morning. The radio's playing and there's no one around, not even HWMBO, the back neighbours have gone away for the weekend and the day stretches ahead with lots of woodwork to be done.

The day passes, HWMBO hasn't turned off the radio, I haven't cut or drilled any fingers and the project is really taking shape nicely.

Sunset - Everything is packed away ready for Sunday and I'm kicking back, pleasantly tired, enjoying a snack and a well-earned vodka or two, talking to my girlfriend. And HWMBO's cooking dinner......

:D
Cheers

Playing a song that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Don't know what it is but something happens. Better than any drug.

Any view that doesn't have cars, houses, roads or people in it.

Sitting around a camp fire drinking cheap cask port out of a plastic mug.

Watching the kids going nuts in the backyard. Where do they get their energy?

A faithful dog.

A sharp plane blade.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget the missus ;)

Saturday morning test driving my 'maturing' home brewed ales, lagers and others, and what a wonderful experience it is too, just like wine appreciation with a good chemical free, subtely hopped/malted brew that just dances on the palate, unlike the mega swills from the supermarket.
Feeding the horses and getting an appreciative rub and nudge from the big sods.
Cooking a great Sunday lunch for anyone who cares to drop in, along with a home brew that suits the occassion.
Fixing the fences that the mules broke during the week, yeah, I actually enjoy fixing fences.
Shafting (letter form) local dickheads, there is no shortage if you need some.
Organising activities for our SCouts and fending of shyte from the committee.
Baring my cold asre in front of the open fire to warm it up, what a gruesome sight it is, so I have been told.

I used to love being out bush at dawn on those 'still' mornings and having a brewed coffee at sun up.

I get a real kick out of watching my kids grow and being with my wife.

Some days I like to just sit in the shop thinking, and come to my senses wondering when it started getting dark.

I like really neat solutions, uncomplicated, working solutions.

And this thread ;)

That one infinitesimal moment when you get that parent feeling, that one special millisecond where you know what it's like to be a parent and to love those children (especially when they are not yours) and you know that all the hard work was/is/will be worth it.

I love life in general. Knowing that I get up each day to do what I have to do gives another day above ground.

Spending time with my wife.
Being outside anywhere.
Our dogs who give us so much love.
Gardening.
A cold beer after a day on the tools or machines.
A bottle of red or white, but reds seem to last longer.
Fishing anywhere.
Woodwork (not that I am the best at it but I still love it)
A wet day( not many of them lately)
A drive somewhere ( rare as well with the cost of fuel)
A good meal to go with the wine.
A mountain view (so much to seee in this great country)
Spending time with friends.
The feeling of accomplishment after working hard to finish a job at home.
Listening to a favourite song or artist. (Country for me, drives the wife mad).
A warm fire on a cool night. ( more red wine)
Listening to the sounds of nature somewhere
A good cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
Catching up with what's been going on in here in the forum.
Live each day as if it shall be your your last, because one it surely will.

Hey Everybody,

Firstly I must say, what a great idea for a thread. I was seroiusly ill in hospital six months ago and it was touch and go, so these things mean more for me now. Things that float my boat are;

Being with my family. I have two girls and a boy, and a wonderful partner who I want to spend the rest of my life with.
Getting out on the bike.
Working around the yard, doing renovating, painting, landscaping. I work on the principle that it doesnt matter how long it takes, it's just time. I do ok on the time scale.
A quality tool in my hand, squeezing the trigger or hefting it in my hands.
That's it for now.

Graham

water would float my boat if i had one:D

but really
a nice song belted out on a stereo at nine on the dial (something heavy like metallica or black sabbath)
the smell of when cutting
a bit of the old woo hoo
kids kicking goals at football
the sound of a nice v8 engine(ford)
the sound of a nice harly davidson
my wife and kids
knock off time
the list goes on and on and on..........

You still do that

Hmm,
The lad playing soccer.
The lass playing (and trashing the place - things leap off shelves in sympathy when she walks into a room)
The dog
The cat ... especially when he bounces off something due to an ill timed throw.

But you can't beat creating a story that sends tingles through your entire system ... the first time you read it. Man that's a buzz.
