Just getting my house stumped now. The guy reckons about 14 metres of bearers need replacing since there is a bit of rot in them. Nothing too drastic mind you but he advised its best to replace them.

Anyway the story is omn the quote is says $18 per metre to replace bearers. He says now this is not F17 but F8 wood which shrinks so I should go for F17 which is $30 a metre. He says he needs to double them up.

I rang around and other stumpers are charging aboutr $18 for F17.

Just wondering what others paid for their restumping and is the guy rippping me off. I told him today Im not paying $30 and he said he will negotiate.

I paid $15/m in your area about 10 months ago ... pretty sure it was F17 used. $7/m for plinth boards. They did it better than I expected by actually putting double stumps in the holes under where they had a join between old and new bearers. In the past I have seen then just cut the old bearer at 45 deg. and sit the other on top with 1 stump below ... looks as though it could move a lot more easily.

Why dont you have a go at replacing the rotten bearers, I did this at my place as the restumper wanted to charge high prices. A nail gun and sabre saw will help. Unless the floor is near perfect, OB wont make a huge difference, if the existing floors are all over the place, the reblocker probably wont get it that level anyway.

The stumper has already replaced them. $30 seems too high especially when he put in his quote it was $18 and now he sas that was for F8 timber. Im paying him tomorrow but I wont be paying the $30 to replace the bearers.
