I have a day to kill this coming weekend in Melbourne. Anyone know any interesting things to do/places to see? Should either be of interest to a hobbyist woodworker, or to my 15 year old son, or prefereably both.

Zen, spend some of the day in and around Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy checking out the furniture galleries. You will take home some great ideas and inspiration. :D
Here is the web addys of a few shops in those areas. The Nic Dattner one is a hoot when you see the prices. Around $4000 for a 1000 x 1000 plain red gum coffee table:eek:
http://www.nicholasdattner.com
Mortice and Tenon is a shop i like. They have alot of contemporary hand veneered furniture
http://www.morticeandtenon.com
Thomas Gannon sells good basic quality furniture. The type that i would recomend if anyone wants to make a quid in woodwork (not ripping him of though;) ) this shop is worth a look
http://thomasgannan.com.au/index.html
And a more modern contemporary shop with some fantastic design. I love their accessory range. Some terrific giftware
http://www.specialthings.com.au
These are a few all located with in a K of each other and their are heaps in between.

If it's a Saturday check out a game at the home of Aussie Rules, the mighty MCG. We don't break Crows supporters noses over here.

Nothing is as good as your home city, Just spent a week in Freeo, a few weeks in Adelaide, some time in Sydney and it's not the actual place it's the support of good people and places you are familiar with. So the best place to live????
Where your heart is.

Thanks for those suggestions guys. I might barter a furniture shop or two in exchange for taking the lad to a footy match. Anyone know who's playing on Saturday...what time...can you buy tickets at the venue...where do you park?
Bodgy: that weblink was refused by my work's gatekeeper. Must be a dodgy site:o

Geelong vs Essendon Friday Telstra Dome 7:40pm kickoff.
Richmond vs Kangaroos Saturday MCG 2:10pm kickoff.
Bulldogs vs Freemantle Sunday Telstra Dome 2:10pm kickoff.
Melbourne vs Collingwood Monday MCG. 2:10pm kickoff.
If you haven't any preference, head to the Saturday game at the MCG - the new stadium and atmosphere there is unbelievable!
Parking is easy there - off Punt Road. Public Transport is also very straight-forward - http://www.mcg.org.au/default.asp?pg=themcgdisplay&articleid=74
Tickets can be bought at the ground on the day.

I am pretty sure that Roos Richmond will be a good game. The G on monday for Collingwood and Melbourne would be a good game too although there is a risk that Collingwood would win that and that takes the shine off anyones day!

Go the tigers. That place is going to absolutely resonate with "yellow & black". It's an awesome experience when one of the best stadiums in the world gets into full volume when it is at capacity.

Each 1/4 is 20 minutes (plus stoppage time, so can be up to 30 mins or so). There is a 15 minute break at halftime, so in total, you are looking around 2 1/2 hours. Given traffic leaving the place, and travel time to Knox, you should be there safely by 6, and probably quite a bit earlier.

`95 Second Semi, 92 thousand, half Richmond the other half Bommers, Tiges down at half time by just over 5 goals, all over acording to the bommer fanatics, Scotty turner shirt front on O`Donnel:eek: :D :D Then goals to the Duck, Turner, Rogers and the Tiger army in absoulute raptures like i have NEVER experienced. What a win. I couldnt stop the tears of joy flowing. I still pop the DVD in at least once every two months:o Nothing like hearing "O`where from tiger land.... " sung at full flight especialy when they scream out "Yellow and Black".... Life dosnt get any better:o:o :o :o :o :o

That would have been bloody awesome - 92k!!! half of em at full volume. My ears rang when I was at the MCG for the final night of the athletics recently, and that was no where near that number. As good (if not better) than the gladiator fights of ancient Rome- you get a feeling what ancient Rome was like even now - the crowds don't change much (or the spectacle for that matter!!!)

Stuart click here http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=matchvideo and click on Step 1 and click 1995 season then semi finals then go to third qtr. 13 minutes in is the first goal then its just jam packed Tiger power. Scotty Turner irons out O`Doneel in the 19 minute mark:D :D The quality isnt flash as it must have been filmed on Beta and dont transfer to digital but its still a good fix for when their isnt much else to do. :D

Had a bit of a rummage through those links Lignum, and as you say, some very nice pieces, but I'd have to agree that $4k for the redgum coffee table is outrageous! I'd love to know how he does it; marketing, marketing and marketing I guess :)

Its the Dattner name. Its a joke as his furniture isnt anything special. Just good solid timber furniture. Ten grand for a basic dinning table:eek: But he is brilliant at marketing. I remember about ten years ago he introduced the "William and Mary" range of table. So he aranged for the three TV networks to meet him and his new table down the Yarra and then proceded to throw the table into the river. Of course it made the news and when every one left the apprentices went in and got it out. What brilliant exposure:rolleyes:

Hmmm, Maybe I'll make a dining table and have some elegant looking folks, or maybe Bert Newton & Eddie Maguire  have dinner on it on the lawns outside the Vic Gallery with a couple of scantily clad serving wenches....

Well, we ended up going to the Richmond v Kangaroos game at the MCG. The train trip from Ripponlea to Richmond Station went smoothly, and we hardly had to line up to get a ticket. It was fun, and the (somewhat sparse) crowd was enthusiastic and passionate, despite the foggy 8°C conditions. But I was a tad disappointed by how much the game seemed to play second fiddle to the advertising. It was just ridiculous. The huge screens were permanently dominated by about 75% of their area with advertising. The banners that the teams ran through were covered in advertising. The perimeter was covered in ads that changed over exactly in time with every goal, distracting attention from the game. So after going to a football match at the MCG my memories are of Vodafone, GIO, Milo, and Silvertop Taxis. That, and a $15 price tag on a chickenburger, chips, and a drink, will probably mean this will be a "once in a lifetime" experience. Maybe next time I'll drag my son to Jimmy Possum's.

Zen, when you got off the train @ Richmond, you should have walked in the other direction, down Swan St. A few good wooden furniture places, and a luthier. Plus good coffee at a few places.

Don't feel bad Zenwood, when we were in Hawaii (Kona), the cheapest burger was US$20, and they conveniently didn't sell hot dogs. (The cynic in me says that's because no-one would pay US$15 for a hot dog)
