Maybe it time for a reset to zero.

That way, the "old" hands would have to regain their rep status, after all its all in fun.
This would of course involve Mods and Admin.

Asbestos suit on.

I don't know about a reset but I find it interesting that it no longer takes much to get 12 bars on your rep bar.
Besides if you reset all the rep all of the reddies would be gone too!:D

Another forum that I have been to have rep points as well but instead of the amount of rep points that you give being tied to how many points you have, Everyone gives the same number of points when they hand out a greenie (or a reddie).

Maybe that is an option?

the only thing i'd like to see is a new system where people are given rep points for humor called the *@&#wit factor for all the comedians round here:p

you could have 2 bars for reps one being for fairdinkum feedback from peers following the principles of the forum rulz n guidelines;)

and the other could be for being a funny #$%^ that way the next time your cash flows on the mend ya can apply for membership to the comedians hall of fame or book ya self into the melbourne comedy festival

Well I reckon that the rep point system is just a bit of fun, however, I think it's far too easy to get six light greens.

I reckon that you shouldn't be entitled to a 6th light until you have, say, 20,000
points. :p

How about 1 green light for every 5000 points. That'll separate the men from the boys. Or in Al's case from the goat.

having just read throughg the faq you get a bright greenie if your over 450 points. i rekon that could be higher cos to get that many points often it'll be just one or two posts.

just my opinion now.

Ok this is my take on rep points.

I think its a great source of fun on the forum if everyone has a good attitude towards it. HOWEVER, since i joined, it seems that some people have gained so much reputation altering potential that it gets rediculous.
a rank newbie can now say something remotely funny and four or five forum leaders give them one greenie each and they have all the lights on.

From my recollection it takes 1500 points to turn on all the light green lights. why not make that 15,000 points? with the current forum stats that will leave a better gradient of points if the points level required to reach each little green block is adjusted proportionately

Anyway, the post i got my most greenies for http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=28193
was meant to be a distraction from the carp that was going on in the forum at the time. i got nine greenies for it which was not what i was trying to achieve but why did all these other members accuse me of fishing for greenies when all i was trying to do was make light of a tense situation occurring in the forum at the time. those who sent me reddies - i know who you arehttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gifexpect it when you least expect it. you have been warned.

//rant mode off// back to the problem, the reputation system has definitely evolved to the stage that it needs some revision. there have been many times that i have thought of giving someone a reddie but i know that my reddies hit quite hard (yeah ok, nowhere near as hard as ozwinner's). if when i call up the reputation window i had the option to send a "part" greenie or reddie, eg, 1/4, 1/2, or other fraction of my total hitting power, i would be more inclined to express my opinions of the posts of others. from where i sitnow im often reluctant to send a greenie or reddie because its just my opinion andi feel my hitting power is well above the level that one persons opinion should make.

Summary of recommendations:

make the levels for green lights and changes of reputation message displayed by clicking on rep bar higher by a factor of 1500 = 15000 inthe new assessment.

allow members to post "partial" greenies and reddies so that they dont always hit the receiver with the full potential of the sender

I dont think it would be possible, I would think reps are either on, or off.

Maybe we could donate the excess reps to a charity?

I think a recalibration of the greenie scale is in order. I just checked the members list sorted by rep point, and there's about 170 people with all the green lights. We should either re-scale the point value or allow more green lights.

We should either re-scale the point value or allow more green lights. Why?

I'm not sure what is gained. Perhaps greenies and reddies should have a life of 6-12 months, if you are trying to find out who is currently helpful or posting useful stuff. Of course, for the people granting greenies for the heck of it, the admins could always review them and, if they are not appropriate, turn them to reddies and return them.:eek::eek:

Groggy my new mate, i think you have hit the nail on the head, to use a woodworking euphemism. let the greenies fall off the back after 12 months, but i suppose then we have to let the reddies do the same, unfortunately. it would still encourage people to make positive posts as it does now, except for the uninitiated (yes i know thats not how you spell idiot). yes i think a 12 month shelf life would workhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Just because someone is not as active as they once were doesn't mean there input or reputation is diminished.By the same token, if someone gets a batch of reddies for a one-off rant that doesn't mean they don't know zip about ww'ing either.

Most regular participants would maintain their greenies I suspect. For myself, I tend to look also at how many posts a person has made, but only if trying to judge the accuracy of advice (if in doubt). Otherwise the greenies really only tell me who are active participants.

The shelf-life, as Doug dubbed it, is only an idea. Speaking for myself only, I see the large amount of users with full-greenie status as an indicator of health for the BB. It means there is a large body of constant participants out there.

I had a quick check and found myself in the highest twenty for rep points.

I also noticed that I have met fifteen of those in the highest twenty. I knew none of them when I first logged on to this board so they are sociable people also.

All those I have met are reasonable woodworkers (apart from ... and .... plus ...;) ) and all are top people.

I think the rep points are a good guide to the skills and the personality of those receiving them. There are others who have not posted as much or have not been members for as long who have not had the opportunity to receive points but are top woodworkers and people.

I am not sure with those at the bottom of the list, I think it consists of people with bad attitudes, poor ways of expressing themselves or perhaps have made one thread that was misinterpreted.

Overall it seems that the rep points give a reasonable indication to a new chum of the value to place on someone's response or advice.

Sturdee

When the system of rep points was first introduced it was an anonymous system, we could see the rep points and comments but not who posted them. Whilst I had no objection to receiving anonymous greenies I objected to anonymous criticism. Hence I made a stance and fortunately the Lord most high :D and his Chief executioner:D made the necessary changes to the system.

This system has, I believe, worked well. It has provided a method of recognition of the posts made and provide valuable feedback on your posts.

Of course the top posters will feature in the top rep point lists for points can only be given on posts made. I am fortunately to be amongst amongst that group. Not so much because of the green dots or the point value, but because of the appreciation and feedback the points, and comments with them, have given me.

Also the points do not assure a newbie that the posts are good advice. All they do is indicate that previous posts have been well received and appreciated by members, so it is a good indication. But, if someone posts bad advice I'm sure others will correct it very quickly, with a flood of reddies to follow, even so never completely rely on the reply to a question but use it as your basis for further reseach.

Being an ex bean counter:D I keep a rough check on the ratio of woodworking points against total points received and they are in my case about 70 % for woodworking advice. I know others get a good reputation and have never posted a woodworking post yet, so maybe the system needs some reforming by maybe making it impossible to give rep points for the jokes section, which so often is no longer funny anyway.

However in making reforms we should not throw out the baby with the bathwater:D , and I hope that generally the system remains for it is great to give, and receive, a quick acknowledgement or encouragement on a post made.

Finally I agree with WB about the members he has met through the board, it has become a much more personal and friendly board since I joined and it has been great to meet the various people. Haven't met as many as WB, but later this year I may travel to Queensland, and if I do I look forward to meeting more of them. Those who don't involve themselves in the social opportunities, like Canberra:mad: , are missing out on another great and developing side of these forums.
